What Is NIL Content Creation? A Guide for Brands and Athletes

NIL content creation explained — what it is, how brand-athlete campaigns actually get produced, what brands should look for, and how athletes build content that lands deals.

Since college athletes gained the right to monetize their name, image, and likeness, a whole industry has formed around NIL deals — collectives, agencies, marketplaces. But there’s a production gap in the middle of it that almost nobody talks about: someone still has to make the actual content.

That’s NIL content creation, and it’s what we do. Mack Media has produced NIL campaigns for Adidas (Miller Moss, Chloe Spreen), Crocs (Ava Vickers), Gatorade’s Player of the Year program, and Stanley’s Notre Dame Football campaign. This guide explains how it works from both sides of the deal.

What NIL content creation actually is

An NIL deal is a contract. NIL content is what makes the contract worth anything: the videos and photos that put the athlete and the brand together in front of an audience. In practice that means:

  • Athlete spotlight campaigns — cinematic brand films built around an athlete’s story
  • Social-first cuts — vertical video made for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, where NIL audiences actually live
  • Product and lifestyle shoots — the athlete with the product, shot to advertising standard
  • Event activations and BTS — capturing brand moments at games, tournaments, and launches

Most NIL deals involve social content as the core deliverable. Which means the production quality of that content largely decides whether the campaign moves anyone.

For brands: why NIL production is a specialty

Plenty of production companies can shoot a commercial. Very few are fluent in sports culture — and audiences smell the difference instantly. The specific challenges of NIL work:

  1. Athlete schedules are brutal. Class, practice, games, travel. Shoots get one window, sometimes at 9pm in a campus facility. The crew has to be fast and self-sufficient — there’s no “we’ll pick it up tomorrow.”
  2. The athlete isn’t an actor. Good NIL content captures personality, not performance. That’s a directing skill: making a 20-year-old comfortable enough on camera that the content feels like them.
  3. It has to work on the feed. A beautiful 16:9 film nobody watches is a failed campaign. NIL content gets planned vertical-first, with hooks in the first second — because that’s where the audience is.
  4. Compliance and coordination. School branding rules, agency approvals, usage rights. The production partner needs to have been in these rooms before.

We built our brand and NIL division around exactly this. Our crews came up filming AAU circuits and pro athletes — sports fluency is the native language, and production quality came from years of national campaign work.

For athletes: content is what lands the next deal

Here’s the loop most athletes don’t see: brands scout your social presence before they offer deals. Professional content raises your perceived value, which raises deal flow, which funds more content. Athletes who treat their feed like a media property consistently out-earn athletes with better stats and worse content.

What actually moves the needle:

  • A signature piece — one cinematic spotlight film that pins your profile and shows brands what you look like in a campaign
  • A consistent stream of short-form — game content, training, personality. Volume matters; polish on every post doesn’t
  • An NIL-ready media kit — portfolio-quality photos and clips a brand can drop straight into a pitch deck

If you’re building toward deals, our athlete services cover all three.

What NIL content costs

Like all production, it scopes to the campaign: a single-day athlete shoot with social deliverables is a different project than a multi-athlete national campaign with a hero film. Brands should budget for the content to match the deal — a five-figure athlete partnership promoted with phone footage is money spent to look small. We quote every project within 24 hours: tell us about the campaign.

The bottom line

NIL content creation sits at the intersection of sports culture and commercial production, and teams that only have one of those skills produce content that fails at the other. Whether you’re a brand activating an athlete or an athlete building your name, work with people who’ve done both. Ours is the team behind Adidas, Gatorade, Crocs, and Stanley athlete campaigns — see the work, then let’s talk.
